Gavin Rossdale On The Road and On SG Radio + Ticket Giveaway!‏

THURSDAY MAY 14 2009 3:00 PM
Submitted by nicole_powers. Edited By nicole_powers.

"It's quite a full-thrust, sexy, hot show," promises Gavin Rossdale, who is currently on tour promoting his solo album, Wanderlust, and the second single from it, "Forever May You Run," which will be released as part of a 5-track E.P. via iTunes on May 26.

Rossdale may be promoting new material, but fans of Bush and Institute won't be disappointed with the new show since the singer is drawing from his entire back catalog for the tour. "When I write set lists I don't draw from obscure B-sides," says Rossdale. "I like it when people are connected to the songs, and I think they would be disappointed if I didn't come out and play a bunch of Bush stuff."

Earlier this week, Gavin took an hour out of his busy touring schedule to call in to the SuicideGirls Radio studio for an exclusive interview which will be broadcast on Indie1031.com this Sunday at 10 pm PST (click HERE to listen live).

Rossdale was also kind enough to reserve 2 pairs of tickets for SG readers at his Los Angeles and Anaheim dates (4 pairs total). And it gets better! He's also promised that the recipients will get to meet him before the show. "A meet and greet for SuicideGirls is like a dream match made in heaven," says Rossdale. "That I'd run to the venue for."

For a chance to win a pair of tickets answer the question below:

Q: What's the 10th track on Gavin's Wonderlust album?

Gavin Rossdale: Live Last Night

Gavin Rossdale only makes the tabloids these days when he steps out with his wife, No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani, or those young kids of theirs with the attention-grabbing names (Kingston and Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale).

But Rossdale is hardly the lesser half in a Britney/KFed pairing. At an uncrowded 9:30 Club on Sunday, the former Bush frontman showcased the same grungy growl and teen idol hunkiness that once helped sell millions of records and fill the largest rock venues.

Back in their mid-1990s heyday, Bush and Rossdale fought off critical apathy in their native UK and owned the hard rock airwaves on our side of the pond by bridging the gap between Nirvana and Creed. Rossdale is now touring behind his first solo record, "Wanderlust," and put much of the new record into his 90-minute set.

"Frontline" was great bombast rock, with drummer Mike Pedicone pounding out the big beat from U2's "Beautiful Day," and Rossdale singing of missing his wife and family (and along the way apparently comparing being a singer on the road to being a soldier at war).

"This Is Happiness," went for heaviness of a Nine Inch Nails sort. But while his fabulous backing combo was up to the task, and Rossdale worked so hard he was sweating through his shirts by the show's midway point, Rossdale is too darn good looking and has too slight a build to be a convincing headbanger .

He looked more at home on the fresh pop ballad, "Forever May You Run," which had hints of Bryan Adams and oodles of "la la la"s.

Rossdale flaunted his sweet side again while sitting on a stool as guitarist Chris Traynor fingerpicked an acoustic during a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide."

Rossdale's performance also pleased fans by recalling the excesses of the Bush era. He hopped up and down and got some fans up front to hop with him on "Machinehead." Several members of the crowd swung their cellphones overhead during a wistful "Glycerine." And "Everything Zen," a song from Bush's debut disc, remained Rossdale's best Kurt Cobain impression as he grinded his guitar against a huge speaker cabinet to incite harmonic feedback. He may never make it back to the arenas, but he's giving his best shot.

Gavin Rossdale performs tonight

By JAMES COOK

TRAVERSE CITY -- To answer your first question, don't expect to see Gwen Stefani at Gavin Rossdale's show tonight at The Terminal.

Stefani and No Doubt started a tour May 3. The opening New Jersey date on her tour coincided with New York stops on his, giving the celebrity couple a little time together with their two children.

"It's the first time I've seen my wife for two weeks," Rossdale said. "It's hard, but it's what people do. They have kids and they work. It's just this celebrity culture now, so everyone is interested. Nothing is private anymore. That's how it works.

"Did anyone ask Bob Marley about his 14 kids? No, but that was in the '70s. Now, it's like, 'So, we saw your son was at a park and he had a yellow bike. Do you think a yellow bike is better than a black bike, because when you have a black bike, you kind of can go faster?' It's so weird now, but we go with it."

Their 3-year-old, Kingston, comes on tour with Rossdale.

Rossdale's stop in Traverse City is part of his reinvigorated solo effort, touring extensively in support of his album "Wanderlust" that has already spawned one hit -- "Love Remains The Same."

The 13-track CD released last year is a return of sorts for Rossdale, the former lead singer for late-'90s alternative rock band Bush.

Rossdale, a London native, certainly sees it as the start of a comeback.

"Of course, absolutely," Rossdale said. "Life is nothing but a comeback. Just being alive is a comeback. That's what I'm doing, staying alive."

Bush -- which struck pay dirt with its very first album "Sixteen Stone" in 1994, producing five top-10 tracks -- never duplicated that success in four follow-up albums, and the band split in 2002.

Rossdale said he plays his old Bush songs at his solo shows. Bush is best knows for hits such as "Everything Zen," "Machine Head," "Glycerine," "Come Down," "Little Things," "The Chemicals Between Us" and "The People that We Love."

In between Bush and his solo album, Rossdale released a CD with Institute in 2005 that was only moderately successful. The band lasted only one album.

"I don't know," Rossdale said. "I thought it was an incredible record. Such a waste. It didn't really happen, and it's a tragedy. But that's the way it goes."

Guitarist Chris Traynor has played along with Rossdale with Bush, Institute and on "Wanderlust."

Through it all, Rossdale's writing and forced, gravelly voice has been a constant.

"The single, 'Love Remains The Same' is quite mellow, and so was 'Glycerine,' and some other ballads I had," Rossdale said. "When you see the show, you get a full range of it. Everything is an extension of Bush."

Despite paparazzi hounding the celebrity couple from time to time, Rossdale encourages cameras at his concerts.

"They've got to make sure the angles are good," Rossdale joked. "My whole life is on YouTube. You come off stage, and boom, you can check out the performance. It's amazing. I love it."

The Best and Worst of Bamboozle '09
2. Gavin Rossdale

When Gavin Rossdale was about to begin his set, my loyal concertgoing posse and I decided that we'd check out a few songs before heading over to see joke-rapper Mickey Avalon do his thing. But then a thought crossed our minds: what if he played old-school Bush songs? We quickly dismissed the thought, assuming that Gavin would stick to his newer solo material.

But when he strutted on stage, immediately launching into the opening chords of Bush's classic anthem "Machinehead," we almost lost it. I'd seen the original Bush line-up perform in 1996 in support of Sixteen Stone, undoubtedly one of the best alternative albums of all time, but after the group disbanded in the early 2000's I figured I'd never again have the chance to see their classic songs played live.

And Gavin didn't stop with "Machinehead." Although he mixed in some of his solo songs, Gavin proceeded to power through "Everything Zen," "Chemicals Between Us" and "The People That We Love" before closing with crowd-favorite "Comedown." And although it was difficult at times to see Gavin amidst all of the fawning girls snapping photos with their camera phones, I left his set energized and with a firm reminder that Gavin Rossdale is a true legend and one of the greatest rock frontmen of all time. The pristine quality of his vocals certainly gave the rest of the weekend's whiny emo bands something to live up to.

The Bamboozle: A Reporter’s Bittersweet Account
Gavin Rossdale, former lead singer of Bush, was one of the best performers of the day. I expected to only hear his solo material, but Rossdale fulfilled my wish and played two popular Bush songs. His performance was dead on and was definitely the highlight of my day.
