The 2009 series will present a diverse group of artists ranging from Gavin Rossdale, the former front man of rock band Bush, to funk-jazz group Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe to country-rock act Shooter Jennings to reggae legends the Wailers.

Sundown in the City has become one of the most anticipated events in Knoxville, regularly drawing thousands to Market Square in downtown Knoxville. The genesis of the concert series was an Oct. 9, 1998, CD release show on Market Square by local rock act the V-Roys. The show wasn’t part of a series, but it drew more than 2,000 revelers, far more than anyone had anticipated. The following year, a CD release concert with R.B. Morris drew 1,000 to Market Square.

In 2000, Sundown in the City was given its name and expanded to four concerts. And, in 2001, Sundown was awarded a grant by the city of Knoxville and expanded to a full, springtime series. With help from several corporate sponsors, the event now takes no municipal funds.

The event has provided a boon to many downtown businesses with restaurants and bars filling both before and after the concerts begin.

In addition to giving local audiences a chance to see nationally and sometimes internationally known music artists, it has traditionally given acclaimed local acts wide exposure by opening for headlining acts. On May 7, the entire show will be made up of local acts — the Royal Bangs, Same As It Ever Was and the Tenderhooks.

Parking is free at city garages at Locust Street, Market Square and State Street after 6 p.m.
